In 1987 he set up his own studio in Letterkenny in Donegal and ran it for the next ten years with wife Jan. In 1997 he was asked by Craftworks to set up and run the Pottery Skills School in Derry to train aspirant potters. The school gained a high reputation for producing highly skilled pottery workers. After running the school for five years Brian returned to working at his own Donegal workshop but combines it now with teaching, doing workshops, demonstrations and working on community arts projects. The majority of Brian’s work consists of graceful functional thrown stoneware glazed in jade green ash-glazes and decorated with bold colour. He also makes raku and pit-fired pots where the effects of smoke and fire are allowed to dance across surfaces. Recently he has renewed an interest in painting with his slab pictures which he paints freely with coloured slips to make vibrant abstract wall hung pieces. Brian combines the best of classical ceramic tradition with contemporary design to produce a unique range of work. |
